About Waste Management Expo Lebanon 2019

Waste Management Expo Lebanon 2019 will address a wide variety of waste management issues in an effort to answer some of the burning questions facing our environment, health, industry and economy. These issues include collection, forwarding, storage, reprocessing and recycling of industrial and residual waste.

Waste Management Expo Lebanon will serve as a platform for waste professionals in Lebanon to exchange ideas and information about the latest and advanced waste and recycling methods. It also presents a tremendous opportunity for the leading industry companies to showcase their waste and recycling products and services to the largest gathering of governmental, municipal and private sector waste and recycling professionals in Lebanon.

National Strategy of Waste Management

In 2005, the MoE has presented a Draft Law on Integrated Solid Waste Management under the METAP programme. It was submitted to CoM on October 14, 2005. The draft law was approved by the CoM in January 2012 and it was accordingly forwarded to the Parliament for ratification. The draft law was reviewed and approved by the Parliament Environmental Committee and is waiting for final approval by the Parliament general assembly meeting.

The draft law incorporates a local solid waste management programs (Article number /9/):

  • Each local administration shall prepare and submit a draft local solid waste management program as specified in paragraph (3) of this Article to the Ministry of Environment, with a copy to the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities, to be duly approved.
  • The programs referred to in paragraph (1) of this Article shall be approved within a period of no longer than 24 months from the date of the issuance of this Law, provided that they would be amended as necessary or after ten years at the latest.
  • The items to be included in the programs referred to in paragraph (1) of this Article shall be determined by a joint decision issued by the Ministers of Interior and Municipalities and Environment. They may include, without being limited to:
    • Information on the local administrations and the characteristics of their solid wastes.
    • Means of collection and transport - including draft Terms of Reference.
    • Cooperation with civil society to provide guidance on solid waste reducing and sorting at source.
    • Available human, technical and financial resources; and the need for technical or financial assistance.
    • Supervision, monitoring and evaluation of collection, transport and marketing of sorted materials.
  • Local administrations with similar solid waste management problems may combine their efforts to develop and implement the draft programs referred to in paragraph (1) of this Article
